Chapter 27

Tuesday morning found Chandler with a pounding headache and foul disposition. She put on a reasonable face while she made Maddie's breakfast.

"Good morning."

Oren came up behind her and she swore if he touched her, she'd stab him with the spatula in her hand. He kept his distance, but quietly said, "We'll talk tonight, okay?"

She poked at the eggs and ignored him.

"Okay, that's fine. I get that you don't want to talk to me."

She shoved the spatula under the eggs and lifted them onto a plate. Brushing past him, she set the plate in front of Maddie.

"Chepchup?"

"Sure." She got the ketchup from the fridge and squirted a small puddle on the plate. She personally thought ketchup on eggs was revolting, but it was an acquired taste Maddie had inherited from Oren.

"I'll see you tonight." Oren gave Maddie kisses.

Chandler went into the laundry room until she heard the door to the garage close behind him, then let out a long breath.

She was so distracted that when the doorbell chimed at nine, she nearly jumped out of her skin.

Maddie jumped up and down. "Jared!"

She pasted a smile on her face and let Jared and Isobel in. A few minutes later, Jared was playing Princess Poppy with Maddie while Finn watched from his swing.

"Ready?"

"I'm, like, so super excited. I was telling my mom about your sewing area and I hope you don't mind, but I showed her a picture of your space and she was like super jealous. I mean, not in a bad way, but she thought it was really awesome."

Chandler was glad for the distraction of Isobel's chatter. "Of course it's okay. If she wants to come over sometime, that's fine, too."

"Oooh, I'll let her know."

"Does she do much sewing?" She spread out the velvet fabric they'd been working on.

Isobel nodded, her blonde curls bouncing. "Yeah, she taught me the basics. I think she'd like to do more because she really enjoyed it. It was part of the homeschool curriculum that I had to learn different basic skills, like sewing and cooking and some household stuff."

Chandler nodded politely and made affirmative noises in the right places while Isobel talked. "Okay, now we'll sew the side hems on the outer panels. Then we'll hem the tops and add the loops for the curtain rods."

It was lunchtime when Jared came downstairs holding a fussing Finn, with Maddie close on his heels. "I think he's hungry. I changed his diaper, but he's still a little grumpy. Did you want me to give him a bottle or..." he trailed off, his cheeks turning pink.

"I'll take him, thanks." She reached out to take the baby. "Do you want to stay here for lunch? There's stuff in the fridge for sandwiches, and there's veggies already cut up in the crisper drawer."

"Sure. Mads, you want a sandwich and some veggies?"

"Yes!" Maddie grabbed Jared's hand and headed for the stairs.

Chandler chuckled. Her daughter, who wouldn't eat a vegetable to save her life, would probably scarf a whole plate of them down just to impress Jared.
